KnC Worm Farm had the distinct pleasure of interviewing our first Small Business Saturday Interviews with Terri at Sodus Feeds and Needs.  Unfortunately, Erin was not able to attend as she was busy with helping someone -which we have come to know that both of these incredible women would do for anyone!

Sodus Feeds and Needs is our local Farm and Feed Store; however, it is much more than that!  If you have not ventured into this store, you are missing out on a community icon.  Let’s get started.

  1. How and why did you decide to go into this business?

Terri’s husband had purchased a building on Rt 14 in Sodus which also had an attached feed store– and simply asked if she would like to run the store.  Of course, she would do it!  In 2017 Terri began running the feed store with no knowledge or experience of running a small business or a feed store!

The first week they made $100.00.  Somedays, they would not have one single customer.

She persevered – and learned.  She learned how to order feed.  How to talk business with the locals.  How to talk to the distributors.  How to build credit.  How to gain rapport with the locals that were starting to come into the store.

Rapport comes easy today.  That is the first thing that you will notice when you enter into this store, is, well, it is not just a store.  It’s home.  You will also notice that they genuinely care about what your pets’ needs are and are always willing to help.

  1. What is the most important thing that you would like people to know about your business?

Fast and easy answer flowed –

“Providing local choice of USA made products for our local community.”  Let’s take a look at their website (About Us) information –

“At Sodus Feeds & Needs, we take the art of animal nutrition very seriously and strive to make your experience doing business with us as simple and efficient as possible. We took over the ownership of our store to serve those who, like ourselves, are always on the lookout for that local, USA made product for their pets, both farm and domestic!

All merchandise is handpicked by our team of mother and daughter, who always find great products at unbeatable prices. Our family is committed to assisting you in finding the items you’re looking for and are there for your every need.”

This mother and daughter team have become very important in our lives – from one visit to this store to purchase bird seed.

  1. How did you come up with the name of your business?

It was already in place.

  • Why did you choose Sodus, NY for your business?

This is a family-owned business in Sodus.  It is family generated.  They both love the small-town feel.  They love our community.  They love helping the little guy- the local farmers.

  1. What is unique about your business?

Another fast answer – “Customer Service!”  We genuinely care about whoever comes in our store and who we are talking to.  We want to know your needs.  We want to know your animals and be able to assist you in any kind of needs they have. We want to have affordable pricing.  We really try to have USA made products.  We stay locally sourced as much as we can.  We are totally customer driven.

This – this is why we keep going back.  We wanted to purchase locally produced bird seed.  Our bird seed is the best that we have found – quality wise and price wise.  And…it is from a local grower.

  1. What makes you most excited about your business?

I love new challenges.  I love knowing we will learn more and more.  I absolutely love that I get to do this with my daughter.  We are so excited about expanding and offering more choices.  We love all of the possibilities.  The vendor events coming are going to be absolutely incredible for our community.

  1. What is it that you most want people to know about your business?

We are here to serve your needs.  The needs of your pets and animals’ lives.  We have a gift shop, pool supplies, and so many things that we have integrated all over our store that if you take the time to really look, you will find some cool and unique things!

We want people to know that it is a women run business.  It’s a family business.  We support local distributors and in turn we support our community’s needs.
