Bill (William Claude) Helfer oral history done in 1994 when he was 67 years old; total 79 minutes.

  • Interesting memories of Sodus Point and Helfer family as recorded for the Sodus Bay Historical Society by himself while living in FL.

  • Tells Helfer family members

  • Helfers ran boat livery and boat repair business in Sodus Point for years; probably 1900’s – 1950’s.

  • George Helfer is well remembered by many older Sodus Pointers as running the “Driftwood” boat from Sodus Point to many cottages on the Bay.

  • He also ran a rescue service before Coast Guard Station was started.

  • Knew and mentioned many families that had cottages and/or lived/ worked in Sodus Point then.

  • Remembers Joe’s Place and many other restaurants and businesses that were here (approx. 1930’s-1950’s)
